What missed calls cost a home service business

Most owners know they miss calls. Few know what those calls are worth. Put in your own numbers below.

This doesn't count repeat business or referrals from those customers, so the real number is usually higher.
How to count your missed calls
Open your phone's call log, or your phone company's app or account page, and count the calls you didn't answer last week. Don't count spam. If you can't tell, count calls from numbers that aren't in your contacts. Most owners are surprised by the number.
Why most callers don't leave a voicemail
Someone with a leak, a dead AC or a broken garage door wants it fixed today. When nobody answers, the easiest thing for them to do is call the next company on Google. Leaving a message and waiting is a gamble they don't have to take. That's why a missed call is usually a lost job, not a callback.
Ways to stop missing calls
- Answer more yourself. Free, but it pulls you off jobs, and you can't do it at night.
- Have someone in the office answer. Works during business hours if you have the staff. Nights, weekends and lunch breaks are still gaps.
- Call people back fast. Better than nothing. Set a rule to call back every missed call within 5 minutes. Many callers will have booked elsewhere by then.
- An answering service. A person takes a message. Usually they can't book the job or answer questions about your business.
- An AI receptionist. Answers every call at any hour, answers your common questions, books the job and sends urgent calls to your phone. Here's how it works.
The other half: leads that wait
Website forms and Google messages work the same way. If a lead waits hours for a reply, they've usually already booked someone. Replying within a minute or two makes a big difference, and a text works better than an email for most homeowners.
